Ford F-150 review for Colorado buyers
The F-150 gives Colorado buyers the widest menu in the full-size class: twin-turbo EcoBoost V6s, a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8, and the PowerBoost hybrid with a built-in generator. The 3.5L EcoBoost carries the top tow rating at up to 13,500 pounds when properly equipped. The trade-off is complexity. Configurations vary so much that the exact truck's engine, axle, tow package and door-jamb sticker matter more than the model name.

How it fits Colorado
Scored 1 to 5 for the way people here actually drive. These are our judgments, based on the facts below. Select a rating for the reasoning.
-
4x4 is widely available and some trims, such as the Lariat, offer a two-speed automatic 4WD setting, but a full-size truck still needs good tires and some weight in the bed.
-
The 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost and the PowerBoost hybrid are all twin-turbo V6s, which hold power better in thin air than naturally aspirated engines.
-
Ford rates the 3.5L EcoBoost at up to 13,500 pounds and the PowerBoost at up to 11,200 pounds in 2024 configurations.
-
The Tremor and Raptor are genuine off-road trucks, but a standard F-150 is long and wide for tight Colorado trails.
-
EPA combined ratings for 2024 4WD trucks run from 19 mpg (3.5L EcoBoost and 5.0L) to 23 mpg (PowerBoost).
-
SuperCrew cabs seat a family comfortably, and bed lengths of 5.5, 6.5 and 8 feet cover most gear-hauling needs.
Which F-150 generation to look at
14th generation 2021-present
Introduced the PowerBoost full hybrid (430 hp, 570 lb-ft) and Pro Power Onboard. The 2024 refresh added the Pro Access swing-out tailgate and set the maximum ratings at 13,500 pounds towing and 2,455 pounds payload.
- 2021-2023 trucks with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package were recalled (Ford 23S65) because a rear axle hub bolt could fatigue and break, risking roll-away or loss of drive power
- PowerBoost tow ratings are lower than the 3.5L EcoBoost: up to 11,200 pounds on 2024 trucks
- Max payload dropped for 2024 versus the outgoing truck, so don't assume a 2024 matches a 2023's sticker
- Confirm which Pro Power Onboard output the truck has (2.0 kW, 2.4 kW or 7.2 kW)
13th generation 2015-2020
The first F-150 with a high-strength aluminum-alloy body, which Ford says cut up to 700 pounds. Plenty of these trucks are on Colorado lots with EcoBoost V6 or 5.0L V8 power.
- About 1.39 million 2015-2017 F-150s with the six-speed automatic were recalled (Ford 26S28) because a sensor signal loss could cause a sudden downshift to second gear and brief rear-wheel lockup
- Confirm the PCM update and any lead-frame repair are done on 2015-2017 six-speed trucks
- Look closely at aluminum body panels for hail repair; our hail guide explains what to look for
- Check the tow package, axle ratio and door-jamb payload sticker before matching a trailer

The F-150 for Colorado buyers
Picking an engine for Colorado
Most F-150s you'll see in Colorado have one of four engines: the 2.7L EcoBoost, the 3.5L EcoBoost, the 5.0L V8 or, from 2021 on, the 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid. The two EcoBoosts and the PowerBoost are twin-turbo V6s. The 5.0L is naturally aspirated.
That split matters at altitude. Turbo maker Garrett cites a rule of thumb of about 3 percent power loss per 1,000 feet for a naturally aspirated engine and explains that a turbo can make up much of that. A 5.0L V8 is a well-liked, simple engine, but at 10,000 feet on Loveland or Monarch it is giving up more of its rated power than a turbo V6. We haven't measured this ourselves; it's the published physics.
If you tow heavy, the 3.5L EcoBoost is the one Ford rates highest, at up to 13,500 pounds on a 2024 SuperCrew 6.5-foot 4x4 configured for it. The 2.7L is the efficient choice if your trailer is light. If you're not sure which suits your use, tell us about your trailer through our vehicle finder and we'll narrow it down.
PowerBoost: the hybrid that doubles as a generator
The PowerBoost pairs the 3.5L twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor and a 1.5-kWh battery, for a rated 430 hp and 570 lb-ft through the 2024 model year. The EPA rates a 2024 PowerBoost 4x4 at 23 mpg combined, versus 19 mpg for a 3.5L EcoBoost 4x4.
The feature Colorado buyers ask about most is Pro Power Onboard. Hybrid trucks come standard with a 2.4 kW system, and a 7.2 kW system is available; gas trucks can have a 2.0 kW system. For dispersed camping, a hunting camp or a job site, running tools or a camp kitchen off the truck is useful. Confirm which version a used truck has, because the outlets and output differ.
The trade-off is towing and payload. Ford rated the 2024 PowerBoost at up to 11,200 pounds and 1,755 pounds of payload. That still handles most travel trailers, but if your trailer is near the top of the range, the 3.5L EcoBoost leaves more margin.
Towing a camper over the passes
Ford's maximum ratings come from one specific build. A 2024 F-150 can carry up to 2,455 pounds of payload only in a particular configuration, and a loaded crew-cab Lariat with a sunroof and big wheels will be far lower. Tongue weight counts against payload, and so do your passengers, dog and firewood.
Before you buy, read the payload figure on the driver's door-jamb sticker, confirm the tow package and axle ratio, and compare that against your trailer's loaded weight, not its dry weight. Our guide to towing a camper in the mountains walks through the math and what long grades like I-70 west of Denver do to brakes and transmissions.
One recall matters specifically to towers. Ford recalled 2021-2023 F-150s with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package because a rear axle hub bolt could fatigue and break, which NHTSA said could cause a roll-away in park without the parking brake or a loss of drive power. Run the VIN and confirm the repair.
Snow, 4x4 and I-70
A two-wheel-drive F-150 with an empty bed is a handful on snow, so most Colorado buyers want 4x4. Some trims, such as the Lariat, come with a two-speed automatic 4WD system, which suits a commute that runs from dry Denver pavement to a snowy Floyd Hill.
CDOT's Traction Law applies on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero from September 1 through May 31, and it centers on tires with at least 3/16-inch tread and the proper rating, or chains. Budget for good tires on any used truck. Our Colorado winter buying guide has a checklist.
If you want serious trail ability, the Tremor adds an electronic-locking rear axle, and the Raptor is a dedicated off-road truck. Both give up fuel economy: the EPA rates the 2024 Tremor at 17 to 18 mpg combined and the Raptor at 16.
Used F-150 checks specific to this truck
On 2015-2017 trucks with the six-speed automatic, check recall 26S28. Ford recalled about 1.39 million trucks because signal loss between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module could cause a sudden downshift to second gear and a brief rear-wheel lockup. The fix is a PCM update, plus a lead-frame replacement on trucks that showed certain trouble codes.
Since 2015 the F-150 body has been aluminum, which is light but can be costly to repair after Colorado hail. Look down the roof, hood and bed rails in good light. Our article on hail damage and used cars covers what repaired panels look like.
There are so many F-150 configurations that the right truck is often hiding in someone else's inventory. If you know what you want, our specific vehicle request lets us search for it, and if you're trading in your current truck, start with our sell page.

Ford F-150 questions
Which F-150 engine is best for towing in the mountains?
The 3.5L EcoBoost, if you're towing near the top of the range. Ford rates it at up to 13,500 pounds when properly equipped, and as a twin-turbo engine it holds power better at altitude than a naturally aspirated V8. Confirm the specific truck's tow package and door-jamb payload, and read our guide to towing a camper in the mountains.
Is the 5.0 V8 or EcoBoost better at altitude?
The EcoBoost, on paper. Naturally aspirated engines like the 5.0L lose roughly 3 percent of their power per 1,000 feet by a common rule of thumb, and turbos make up much of that. The 5.0L still works in Colorado; it just gives up more up high.
How much can an F-150 PowerBoost tow?
Up to 11,200 pounds for a properly equipped 2024 truck, with up to 1,755 pounds of payload. That's less than the 3.5L EcoBoost, so check your trailer's loaded weight before choosing the hybrid.
What mpg does the F-150 hybrid get?
The EPA rates the 2024 F-150 PowerBoost 4x4 at 23 mpg combined (22 city, 24 highway). A 2024 3.5L EcoBoost 4x4 is rated at 19 mpg combined.
What is the F-150 rear axle bolt recall?
Ford recall 23S65 covers 2021-2023 F-150s with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package. A rear axle hub bolt can fatigue and break, which can damage the axle splines and lead to a roll-away or loss of drive power. Check the VIN on NHTSA's site and confirm the repair.
Which F-150s were recalled for sudden downshifts?
Ford recalled about 1.39 million 2015-2017 F-150s with the six-speed automatic (recall 26S28) because a signal loss could trigger a sudden downshift to second gear. The fix is a PCM update and, on some trucks, a lead-frame replacement.
Is the F-150 good in snow?
Yes, with 4x4 and good tires. Some trims, such as the Lariat, have a two-speed automatic 4WD system. An empty bed means a light rear end, so tires with deep tread make the biggest difference.
F-150 or Ram 1500 for Colorado?
Pick the F-150 if you want the highest available tow rating, a hybrid with onboard power or a turbo V6. The Ram 1500 is worth comparing if ride comfort and its newer twin-turbo inline-six matter more to you.
